for individuals  -  for teams  -  for results

Sarah’s post from last month inspired me to run an exercise in a TMP debrief session recently.

Working with a group of senior leaders within a leadership development programme, we had plenty of fun and generated a lot of constructive discussion by using a variation of the Speed Dating exercise that Sarah described.

Our main objective was to support our learners in reflecting on their own Profiles and having a chance to consolidate their understanding of what the Profiles reflects to them about their leadership style. In addition, it was a chance for them to know a little more about colleagues going through the programme with them.

The Team Management Profile session was included within the second day of the first of three separate week-long workshops. In addition to running a number of different exercises (SWOT the Wheel; Line-Up; Standing Around The Wheel), we also ran this triads exercise that worked really well.

The process was pretty much the same as the Speed Dating activity, but I opted to run it in groups of three instead of pairs. After the allotted four minutes of discussion time around a question, the trio disbanded and they reformed new trios to address each different question.

The questions I asked them to consider and discuss were:
  • What motivates me as a leader?
  • If I could improve in one area of work, it would be…
  • In projects, you’ll get the most out of me if you...
  • In projects, what I enjoy least is…
  • My usual approach to decision-making is...
  • My greatest frustration as a leader is...
  • Other people would describe my leadership style as...
  • A time when I was particularly grateful for my work preference...
We generated a lot of energy and buzz and the whole thing worked a treat. Next time you’re looking for a new way to help your learners share their thoughts, give it a try and let us know how you go!
