Learning Transfer - Tips from our 2012 Roadshow

This month at TMS, we’ve had a lot going on including hosting our exciting Rethink Learning Transfer roadshow series across Australia. Thank you to all who attended. You helped create the buzz and interaction that made the event a huge success!

Training Tip: Spinning Around the Wheel

How often do you place yourself into someone else’s shoes?

At TMS, we know this is not easy…but it is possible. And helpful!

Those of you who have received a Team Management Profile (TMP) will know that it all starts with self-awareness. Having a simple and practical language to explain how we see the world makes a difference too.

Training Tip: TMS Speed Dating Activity

Are you looking for an energising activity to encourage learners to share their Team Management Profiles (TMPs) in a fun way?

If yes, TMS Speed Dating is the answer. If Speed Dating is not a term you think your learners will be comfortable with, you can always change it to something else like Speed Networking or Speedy Meetings. But remember the purpose is the same whatever the name - to fast-track information sharing within teams.

Training Tips: Improve Listening in 60 Seconds!

In a recent workshop we were looking at two important Linking Skills - active listening and communication. To quickly identify the behaviours, actions and implications of these skills we played a simple game. It took 60 seconds, two sentences, some music and a lot of laughs. The game I’m talking about is Chinese Whispers!

For anyone unfamiliar with this - you make up a sentence then whisper it to the next person, who then whispers it to the next person and so on. When it reaches the last person they have to say aloud the message they received.

Training Tips: How we organise ourselves & others - Structured & Flexible

Begin With A Simple Definition

Firstly, explain the characteristics of each construct: Structured and Flexible. Remember, no-one is always Structured or always Flexible. We can all do Structured and Flexible things, but the important thing to remember is that we don’t do them with equal enjoyment or comfort. It’s also important to stress that these constructs describe preferences, not skills.

Training Tips: How we make decisions – Analytical & Beliefs-based

“When making a decision of minor importance, I have always found it advantageous to consider all the pros and cons. In vital matters, however, such as the choice of a mate or a profession, the decision should come from the unconscious, from somewhere within ourselves. In the important decisions of personal life, we should be governed, I think, by the deep inner needs of our nature”.
                                                                                            - Sigmund Freud

Training Tips: How we gather and use information – Practical & Creative

Keep your eyes on the stars but keep your feet on the ground.’

                                                                      - Theodore Roosevelt

Here we look at the second RIDO scale: How you prefer to gather and use Information: Practical or Creative; and provide three simple exercises for the time conscious to distinguish the two concepts at either end of this scale.

Training Tips: How we relate to others – Extrovert & Introvert

General Tips

Of all the RIDO Scales, it is this one that seems to bring out the stereotypes!  Repeatedly using the term Extrovert and Introvert (as in ‘Extroverts do this’, and ‘Introverts like that…’) can unintentionally have the effect to categorising people. A way to avoid this labelling is instead of saying ‘Extrovert’ and ‘Introvert’; try: ‘people with a preference for Extroversion/Introversion’.  While it takes longer to say, it does help avoid ‘boxing’.  It’s also consistent with the idea that we can all do Extroverted and Introverted things, it’s just we tend to prefer one over the other.

Energiser 5- What do you feel?

To finish off our series of new TMS energisers, let’s look at your sense of touch. This interactive activity is great in programs to remind participants that people approach the world in different ways. This is an important lesson to drive home because if people appreciate and understand how to maximize diversity they are one step closer to becoming a high-performing team.

Energiser 4- What do you taste?

In workshops, water helps participants stay hydrated and focused. This is important when participants are learning about important things like themselves and how to communicate with others. So if you have some water nearby why not try this energiser?
